Kevin Hansen nets silver in RallyX Nordic Lites Championship

Joint top heading into the final round of the series at Solvalla, Sweden [September 12], Hansen took the championship lead at the Intermediate Classification and lead the series by four points.

In difficult weather conditions, Hansen fought back from an uncharacteristically poor start from pole position in the first semi-final to lead the race on lap two - following a brilliant overtaking maneuver on the leader. However, after landing from the circuit’s jump, Hansen clipped a corner marker and broke the steering on his Peugeot 208 Lites, putting him out of the event. Championship rival Tobias Brink went on to win, just edging Hansen to the crown.

“The car felt really good this weekend as usual and things got better for us through the heats. We made some changes after day one and won heat three quite comfortably. It was a challenge after that with a five-hour break between heat three and the semi-final,” said the Red Bull Peugeot Hansen Junior Team driver.
“I made a poor start in the semi. It was raining and then it stopped. I tried to start in the dry line, but the start RPM was too low. I eventually got away in fourth, but moved forward. I lost time behind [William] Nilsson but I managed to pass him for the lead, then over the jump I don’t know what happened. Maybe I got blinded by the fireworks shooting off as we jumped over the crest or something, because I can't remember seeing the black tyre barrier on the inside. All of a sudden I had hit the track marker and broke the car. It was my mistake and it lost the championship. We weren’t able to get to the final, that’s how it is, and I am really sad and disappointed.”

Although regularly the fastest driver in the RallyX Nordic Lites series, Hansen’s title challenge was hampered by poor luck earlier in the season. The team now turns its attention to the next round of the RX Lites Cup – support category to the FIA World Rallycross Championship – in Barcelona, Spain next weekend [September 20], where Hansen currently leads the standings by nine points.

“We’ve had no luck this year in Sweden, so I’m really looking forward to getting back into Europe to try and continue the good pace we’ve had in the RX Lites events. I feel comfortable in the car, again in Solvalla we showed we are one of the fastest, so we just need to get our heads down and try to come back strong in Barcelona,” continued Hansen. “The aim is to have a clean race and try to increase the championship lead. The RX Lites is the big championship to win in this class, and we will do everything we can to try and do that.”
