Hansen moves into RallyX Nordic Lites title contention with Kalix win

2015-07-19

The young Swede now lies just six points off the championship lead.Fighting back from a small technical glitch in the opening heat at Kalix, Hansen set fastest time in heats two and three in the Peugeot 208 Lites to secure first overall at the Intermediate Classification and pole position for semi-final one.

“We made up for heat one in the second and third heats. In heat three, I took the joker on the first lap and pushed really hard – I set the best lap of the weekend (44.5 seconds). We were the only car to set a time less than 45.0 seconds, so that was a great feeling,” said the Red Bull Peugeot Hansen Junior Team driver. “It’s the first time I’ve raced at Kalix, the track is very special with the big velodrome. It suited us from the start of the weekend and we worked hard on the setup of the car to get the most out of it, as always.”

Victory in the semi-final earned Hansen pole position for the final, from where he made the best start and controlled the race from the front throughout. “The final was quite easy in the end. We had some hard fighting to get there but the speed was really good all weekend. In the final I took the start and the others were fighting a bit behind so I got the gap and tried to take it calmly from lap two, to bring it home. The gap was increasing all the time though; I had seven seconds going into the last lap before I took my joker. It’s so good to win after a hard start to the year in the championship.”

Pleased with the Kalix performance, Hansen hopes he can continue the momentum to the next round of the championship in Arvika in just two weeks time, in his bid to defend his 2014 title. “We’re closing in on the lead and it feels really nice to confirm to everyone that we are the fastest at the moment. I’m looking forward to Arvika. I took my first Lites win there last year, I really like the track and I know where I can push harder and improve. We know we have a really good car and I feel really confident. I think (championship leader, Tobias) Brink is a bit nervous at the front and I’m the one doing the chasing, so the pressure is all on him. I’m going all or nothing for the championship, so we will push really, really hard.”
